I'm a good speller, too, but I sold my Shorter OED a few years ago and they haven't issued a new edition, so I lean on dictionary.com a lot. I should rack a small dumbbell in place of the books, just for the exercise. Being good means staying good, if you know what I mean.
And I've known professors whose assistants do all their spelling - not doing it well seems to have little to do with smarts, so we mustn't preen too much (except to those we love).
I am reminded daily how right your great-great-grandmother was.

Viscount LaCarte

You ARE good.

I think there is a lot of good music in "classic rock" - like Todd for instance, but the cream doesn't seem to rise to the top...

blue girl

Grisha, Hope you didn't think I was preening -- quite the opposite -- ok. Sometimes I do - but my husband's got great best *smackdown!* capabilities!!

Viscount -- did you click on the Kansas link?!! Bah!!

Kevin Wolf

I second the Viscount's sentiment, Blue Girl.

I don't know jack either and I much prefer people who are willing to admit that.

Elsie

Prerogative, huh, not perogative??? I just had to look it up to be extra sure. And you're right! And as my grandmother used to say, "Even the smartest person can learn something new every day."

Viscount LaCarte

>Viscount -- did you click on the Kansas link?!! Bah!! <

I did but left before the music started, which I just discovered by revisting, and now that awful song is stuck in my head.

I hate that song. The thing that bugs me the most about it is that they leave NO space in it.

The riff "Ba na na naa, (rrra) ba na na NAA (rrra) - ba na na na-na na na naa (rnng) - na naa (rrra)" the "rrra's" being the organ punches stuffed in between the already verbose riff is bloody awful.

And now it is stuck in my head! I hafta hide 'neath the cans and play something good like Kevin Gilbert or Steely Dan to knock it out...

Now you know what I felt like the day I clicked on your "Iraq & Roll" link!! I put Lou Reed on though to kick it out!

(If I HAD TO CHOOSE -- I'd pick Kansas over Clint whatever his name is anyday I would suffer through the Ba,na,na,na etc!)

Elsie! Isn't that crazy?? Doesn't it sound like Scooby Doo would be saying it??

yaya

Hey Blue Girl - It is so funny that you wrote about this particular word - there was this guy in Crawford, TX who they interviewed, don't know why, didn't catch the reason, and he pronounced it "rogative." Hopefully he will read your post and learn something new too!! Have a good one!!!

Jedmunds

Blue Girl, I thought you were like 22. I swear you could pass for it.

blue girl

Jedmunds! You kidder -- you flirt! (keep it up! -- you're sending out good kharma - and God knows the world needs it today)

Nonplussed

Um... I think "raz" should be spelled "razz"

:-)

blue girl

Nonplussed!

Ha!!

...let me check dictionary.com...stay tuned.

blue girl

...you are correct, Sir! Ding, ding, ding!

Guess you caught me asleep on that one...zzzzzzzzzzzzz

jahf

"Fall seven times, rise EIGHT times."
--Asian Proverb

Well done BG.

blue girl

ooooh. I like that one.

:)

Pepper

oy! all this readin' about the prerogative, and no mention of Mr. Bobby Brown, whose song was a big hit in my junior-high days!

[cue Pepper, sliding across the floor, singing, "Make my own decisions! Whoa! It's my prerogative! Oh! Ho! Ho!" ...]
