The Skimmer and I went out for a drink last night. Not at our usual place but at a different place which was half empty and too bright. Not feeling comfortable in the fluorescent lighting, we decided to go to a different place where a fire crackled in the brick fireplace in the corner and where the lights were turned down nice and low. We drank our drinks and ate some hors d’oeuvres and decided to make it an early night. Driving home, I was scanning the radio for a good song. And I found one.
“Oh my God!” The Skimmer said, “Turn this!”
“No, listen to it. It’s such a great song. Aw.”
“Oh, it’s crushing me. Crushing me!”
“I know. It’s so sad. I love it.”
“I can’t take it!”
“Shhhhh!” I laughed. “Feel the misery.” And I began to sing...
“We tried to reach beyond the emptiness, but neither one knew how...”
“Oh man. Why don’t you just turn on Taxi next?”
“Ooooh, I love Taxi!”
And I continued singing, “We drank a toast to innocence, we drank a toast to time...”
“I am now pining for my youth. I’m destroyed.”
I laughed and stopped singing as The Skimmer pulled into the driveway. We came inside the house and got ready for bed. It was eleven o’clock.
It was dark and silent in our bedroom, all I could hear was Harry Chapin’s voice in my head.
And she said, "How are you, Harry?"
I said, "How are you, Sue?
Through the too many miles
and the too little smiles
I still remember you."
I rolled over and said, “Happy New Year, Skimmer.”
He laughed and said, “Happy New Year, Dream Crusher.”
