Blue Moon Tonight

Karla, a commenter over at Jennifer's, reminded everyone earlier that there'll be a blue moon tonight.

First of all, the last thing I want to be thinking about is Tom Delay in a hot tub.

Secondly, no one can drink twelve martinis.  That little, conniving squirt would be dead.

Third, Tom Delay is actually worse in my mind than Newt Gingrich.  No matter when all of their adulterous affairs were committed.

Now, I'm going to go back and keep thinking of Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams and try my best to erase the thought of Tom Delay in a hot tub.  Oh God.  Now I'm picturing Newt Gingrich in a hot tub, too.

Of Universal Importance

Watching a Genesis tribute segment on a VH1 music awards show over the weekend, I had to suffer through a Genesis cover by the group, Keane.  Now, Keane's ok in my book.  I really like some of their songs.  Even saw them perform my favorite one in New York City last summer.  That was magic.  But, they sounded like a high school band covering Genesis.

Then, to my surprise, I learned before the commercial break that Genesis would actually be performing a couple of songs on the show.  Yippeeee!  I couldn't wait.

Robin Williams came out after the break and in his crazy, amphetamine-ridden way, introduced Genesis.  I wish I could tell you what he said, but I didn't understand even one word.

They first played, "Turn It On Again."

I told The Skimmer, "I know Billy Pilgrim's right!  They're going to open with this song when we see them in September!"

The Skimmer just nodded his head.  He's used to my rambling on and on about Genesis over the years.  Poor guy.

And then I noticed how sluggish the song was.  No energy!  Oh no!  They stink now!  The concert's going to be terrible.  Phil's not moving!  What's going on.

I sat on the couch in despair, hugging a pillow tightly to my chest, waiting for the next number.

"Oh no, Skimmer!  It's 'No Son of Mine!'  I'm not sure we should go to this concert!  I have to talk to BP!"

"Who?"

Billy Pilgrim likes "No Son of Mine".  (Pa.  Shaw.) I think my feelings can best be put into words by someone else's words.  The Uncanny Canadian remarked on this post:

I went upstairs and surfed over to Empire of the Senseless.  BP had written a pretty lengthy post on music, which I read, but kind of ignored, because I had to tell him of my Genesis concert fear.  Plus, I am the Queen of Off Topic Island.  A title Jeddie Ningo bestowed upon me long ago.  (In my defense, he was probably writing about women's behinds or lace-up shoes or whatever else it is he thinks he should be writing more on these days to stay relevant in Virginia politics.) 

I can't help it if my mind wonders and I feel I must tell you all things.

Phil not being theatrical? Fine by me. If he was an actor, he'd be a total scenery-chewer. I did notice, however, that he relaxed more when he went behind the drums- he still thinks of himself as a drummer.

What I noticed: Daryl Stuermer, rockin the bass way over on the left. And Chester, of course. But I also noticed some of the light setups, wondering if that was what we're gonna see.

You see, BG, you're gonna have to take it up with Zelmo - he saw the last tour, and has always reported on it favorably, specifically the stage presentation. It would, of course, have been heavy on the "We Can't Dance" numbers, which are mainly of the sort you decry.

Yes!  I decry them!

I think you may be forgetting, though, that the Genesis show is a whole presentation, and it builds, along with the theatrics, over the course of the show. I don't think the VH1 crapola was particularly their venue. I'm sure they were limited in what they could play, and how long. I can't imagine that they had time to get their own feeling into the music, and they were constrained by an unfamiliar staging (see, normally, I'd criticize a band that can't just get over it and get the job done, but Genesis have always been more reserved and studious)

But finally, if you're really afeared, you just send those tix on to me and I'll let you know it was worse than your fevered imaginings.

Yes.  I did notice Phil perk up when he ran back and sat down at the drums.  He's great on the drums.  I saw Eric Clapton once, probably in the mid-eighties with Phil on drums.  I had second row seats and Mr. Clapton was right in front of me for most of the show.  I watched the sweat drip from his cheek up close while he kept his cigarette under the top string in the neck of his guitar.  Now that I think of it, I really don't remember that much of Phil.  But, always figured if Eric Clapton had him playing drums, then he must've been a pretty good drummer.

Anyway.  I'm getting off topic!

I don't remember Genesis concerts "building."  I remember them starting at 11 and staying at 11 for three straight hours, four nights in a row, the last time I saw them when I was just a wee lass.

I responded to BP's post.  This time, pretty much on topic.  Take a picture!

I *did* notice how he went to town on the drums. You know what else? The older I get, the more into drums (or drumming, if you will) I become. Not necessarily *the drummer* -- but, the drums. I like the sound.

I loved the way he used to get into it. And I'm sure Zelmo's right. Who couldn't resist 20,000 screaming fans!!

Is Tony Banks alive? I know he's not the most animated guy to have ever been on stage...but, can he move?

I predict the Genesis tour will consist of one "old" song followed by a "new" song throughout the set. This will please everyone, and no one.

By most reports, he's the one who is most critical of all musical elements of the band. If it's not perfect, he's pissed.

I always thought he was the most likely one to leave the band, cuz he never seemed to be having fun. AND he was never happy to be interviewed, that was the only time you could see him smile about what they were doing...

Oh, and I'm gonna call Zelmo on his prediction. What's defined as "old" and "new" songs? You can choose the point to fit your prediction. Besdies, all the songs are at least fifteen years old- they're all old, ain'a?

But here's the thing: there WILL be an "Old Medley" in which bits of all kinds of things will be thrown, mostly the old of which you speak. The beginning of the show will, of course, feature TIOA, then go into a couple of straightforward songs, then a longy like Home By The Sea or abacab. Then a few shorter ditties, then the more dramatic stuff. The Big Songs will come later, with lgiht show wow factor.

For a song mix, think "The Longs" combined with "The Shorts" with a bit less emphasis on the "we can't dance" albmu, becasue it's no longer current. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of emphasis on the middle four discs (the current remasters) but otherwise , I'd expect to see something, a bit off every album except "Trespass". If they play "the KNife" I'll eat my ticket.

I am working on something.  I should've worked on it over the weekend.  But, I didn't wanna.

Because I have no idea how to do it.

No idea.  Notta. 

But, has that ever stopped me before?

Um, maybe.  But it can't stop me today because it's due today.

I'm designing something I have no business designing.  Here's kind of what it looks like so far.

Words have been changed to protect the innocent.  Except for "Woo-hoo!"  I'm actually using "Woo-hoo!" in the design in Jennifer's honor.

Ok, back to it.  I'm gonna get fired!  Woo-hoo!

"This is real, mom."

My nephew, David, left for Iraq last Sunday, May 20 with 27 other men.  He flew from Houston to London, and then on to Dubai.  He said he had never been to Las Vegas, but imagined that you could put all of Las Vegas in one tiny corner of Dubai.  He said it was huge and beautiful -- a futuristic looking city.

They then flew from Dubai to Baghdad.  And immediately heard bombs going off along with gunfire.  Constantly. 

He called home after landing in Baghdad.  His mom told us he sounded very tired. 

"What are you doing in Baghdad?!  I thought you weren't going to Baghdad!"

"We're only here for a few days, mom."

One of the guys he was with decided to quit and go home after being in Baghdad for only one day.  The sound of bombs and gunfire did not sit well with him.

Leaving Baghdad, David flew, in a sandstorm, to Camp Cupcake with two other men.  Both ex-military who did not re-up.  They'll make a lot more money fixing vehicles for this private contractor.  They flew on a Russian plane, flown by Russian pilots.  We're not sure why.

David said Camp Cupcake used to be a well-equipped Iraqi base before the Iraqi army abandoned it.  There's a hospital on the base, in pretty good shape, but completely covered in sand.  David said it's like walking around on a movie set.  Although they had been told they would be sleeping in a dormitory-type building, he said they're sleeping in tents for now.  Not sure if they're air conditioned or not.  They're kept separate from the military personnel.

No one tells them what the temperature is over there.  The indicate the temperature by flying different colored flags.

At first we thought they might do that for psychological reasons, so people wouldn't become obsessed with the high temperatures -- the high numbers.  But according to this website, the military flies these flags to know how to restrict outdoor activity in dangerous weather.  Although the following information discusses weather cards, it also says further into the article that, "at a glance, people can look at the flag condition in their training area and refer to the card to know what that means in reference to the work-rest cycle."

During the summer, once the thermometer gets to 85 degrees, weather and bioenvironmental personnel begin to monitor the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature for the heat stress index.  This indicates how a body may negatively react to heat based on temperature, humidity and wind.  They inform the senior leadership and a notification chain begins so personnel involved in training are made aware of a possible change in the work-rest-hydration cycle.  They can do this by checking the weather warning cards.

The front of the card covers the first two weeks of BCT, a time more severe restrictions as basic trainees acclimatize to Colorado.  Each card starts with white at the top, signifying no restrictions.  Green indicates the WBGT is climbing up and to supervise training closely.

Yellow advises that physical training be monitored closely and drill be conducted with a 10-minute break every hour.

Red indicates drill and physical training be suspended along with halting assault and obstacle course training.

Black advises to suspend all course activities and limit outdoor exposure.

Although the article references a training base in Colorado, I'm assuming it's the same military procedure everywhere.  Next time we talk to our nephew, I'll ask him.

They've been flying a red flag for the last few days.  Not sure if a private contractor would restrict outdoor activity the way the military would have to do.  It will be interesting to find out.

Because David's been there less than a week, he's still not sure what all he needs that his family members will be more than happy to send to him once he finds out.  He said he'll definitely need more clothes, though.  They get so dirty, so fast, that all he's been doing since he got there is laundry.

His mom told The Skimmer, "He's never done laundry in his life."

The Skimmer said, "So, did he sound scared when he called you from Baghdad?"

"Yeah, he sounded a little scared and really tired.  He said, 'This is real, mom.'"

This website says everybody’s talking about the Thirsty Parrot because it's the hottest ticket in town.

Well, the only people talking about it Friday evening were me and The Skimmer.  I dialed my cell phone.

"I'm down here at this place and it's closed.  And I mean closed closed.  Out of business closed."

"Where are you?"

"I'm in the parking lot.  I'm trying to think of where to go."

"I don't like you by yourself in that parking lot."

"Well, it's alright.  It's daylight and I'm walking toward E. 9th now.  I don't see any bad guys.  And if I do, I'll throw my cell phone at them."

"Well, you were robbed in broad daylight, remember?  Didn't you guys check to see if that bar was open?"

"Yeah!  I did!  But, decided to meet there anyway.  Just for fun.  I know.  I'll go the The New York Spaghetti House."

I walked up the sidewalk with Jacobs' Field to my right, an area that should have been hopping at 5pm on a Friday before a holiday weekend, and stopped at the corner of E. 9th and Bolivar. 

"Guess what?"

"What?"

"The New York Spaghetti House is closed.  Closed closed again.  The sign's even gone!  How sad.  What's going on down here?"

"Cleveland's in bad shape."

"Guess what?  E. 9th Street is now called 'Rock and Roll Boulevard.'"

"Well, that'll bring Cleveland back.  Are there any people around?"

"A couple, but they seem harmless.  It's pretty dead around here.  Weird.  I know what I'll do.  I'll go into that place that Alice Cooper used to own.  But, it's not Alice Cooper's place anymore, it's called 'Local Heroes Grill & Bar.'  Geez.  Why can't anything make it down here?"

"Well, hurry up and get in there."

"Ok!  Stop scaring me.  I'm finally not scared to come downtown and you're scaring me."

I got a hold of my girlfriend and told her to meet me at the new place.  She showed up about 20 minutes later and we sat at the bar catching up.

About an hour later, two young guys came be-bopping through the door.  And made a beeline straight to me.  Too close.  Standing within a foot of me, face to face.

"Hey, how ya doin'?"

"I'm ok."

They looked at my friend, "How you doin'?"

She didn't say a word.

They backed off and walked over to a booth and sat down.  They weren't there to eat or drink.  They were tapping their feet and leaning back in their seats, staring at us.

Bad news.

Mel and I sat there talking and those two guys sat there staring.  Mel had her back to them.

"Are they still there?"

"Yep."

I was robbed at gunpoint three years ago by a young guy.  It took me a couple of years to get over it.  I knew I was over it when I met a friend in Cleveland Heights to see a movie and didn't run to my car when we left the theater.  It didn't matter if I was in downtown Cleveland, or an inner-ring suburb like Cleveland Heights or way out, firmly in the heart of suburbia.  It didn't matter what race a guy was, how old they were or how they were dressed.  If a guy came within two feet of me, I'd freeze.  My fear instincts had been thrown off.  And you need that instinct.  If I would have paid attention to my gut instinct three years ago, I never would have had a gun in my face.  Not a comfortable way to live, being scared all the time.

My fear instinct had recalibrated itself and I knew those two guys in that booth were up to no good.  But, I didn't know what to do about it besides completely ignore them.  But, I had already answered them when they showed up and surprised me, so I had given them an in.

They sat there for a few more minutes and then got up and be-bopped out the front door.  High fiving and laughing. The manager came out from behind the bar and walked outside, watching to see where they were going.

My friend said, "Do you see them?  Are they leaving?"

"Yeah, they're leaving.  They're walking up the street."

"They were bad news."

"I know."

There weren't that many people in the restaurant, but everyone knew what those two guys were up to.

Mel and I sat there for another hour and a half and I knew we had to leave before it got dark.  We paid the tab and then walked to my car.  We didn't run.

Progress?  I'm not so sure.

So, (Jeddie hates people who start sentences with "So" -- So ... what.  I'm doing it anyway.)  Jeddie emailed me a couple of days ago and wrote this message:

So, anyway.  I clicked over to his site.  He tagged me and Bobby Lightfoot with a meme.  I have to say, this might be one of the weirdest memes I've seen on the Internets and I'm not answering all the questions.  So, deal with that!  Some of them are disgusting!

I don't know.  But, I've always really like this song.

I don't know.  But I was at this party last weekend and you know what someone brought?  A gigantic bowl -- and I mean gigantic bowl -- of chopped up onions.  That's it.  That's all they brought.  And they just plopped it down on the table like that made any sort of sense at all.

5. So, how big is it?

I don't know.  But you know what I hate?  How guys I work with are so into telling me how big their files are.  Like it's some earth shattering news how big some files can get.  "Did you know this file is 300 mgs, blue girl?"  "My God, blue girl, my file is huge!  It's almost 19 million bagillion mgs." 

I don't care how big your file is, big guy!  Deal with it!  Just stuff it, for cryin' out loud.

6. So, Budweiser or real beer?

I don't know.  But, I don't care how much all you guys hate advertising, I really, really, really wish I would've worked on this spot.

7. So, what do you feel about your nose?

I don't know.  But you know what I think about a lot?  Kathleen Turner's nose.  Have you ever noticed that her nose has gotten a lot bigger over the years?  That must be weird for her.

8. So, Children: Baked or broiled?

I don't think children should get baked.  In fact, I'm doing everything I can think of for Blue Kid not to experience getting baked.

9. So, do you like it when I do this?

Depends on what you're doing.  If you're sittin' there thinking about telling me about how big your file is, then forget it.  If you're sittin' there thinking about tagging me with another meme, you can forget that, too.

No.  I wish the right wing war bloggers would just shut up already.

I don't know.  I don't want to think about Beyonce's gross, disgusting toenails.

My BFF Is A Lurker

In Claire's new post, she writes about and links to her friends who have blogs.

None of my friends have blogs.  Well, none of my friends in real life have blogs.  All my blogging friends have blogs.  Funny, that.

Blogging is such a ingrained part of my life now that when I'm with real life friends I'll talk about my blog friends.  Like they're real people I know.  When I do this, my real life friends all look at me with the exact same expression that says, "Now you've done it.  You've totally lost your last marble."

Most of them don't understand that bloggers are real people, who do real things, like get together to go bowling.

I'm not a big phone person.  By the end of the day, after talking on the phone all day with clients, the last thing I want to do is get back on the phone with friends.  I'm all talked out.  But, not by email.  I can be a total blabbermouth by email.

My best friend usually doesn't email, she calls.  She left me a voice mail awhile back.  She said, "Why aren't you calling me back?!  You're ditching me!"

Of course that made me laugh so I called her right back and when she answered I said, "I'm not ditching you!"

"You're ditching me!"

"No way!"

"You have a new friend!"

"Nuh uh.  No way.  You're still my BFF!"

She knows about my blogging addiction and how much time I spend online.  And that maybe that's one reason I don't call her back right away.  But, she understands and knows you're all sort of real.

Since she's my BFF, of course I have to tell her about my blog friends.  Especially the ones who make me laugh.  Like Res Publica.

I've said to her a hundred times, "Oh my God.  You would love him.  He is hysterical!"

She said to me once, "I don't get that Pinko Punko person."  I said, "Don't worry.  No one does."

Nee.  A total laugh riot.  The last time we were together, we were in her hotel room looking at photos on her laptop.   She brought up the most horrendous photo of me anyone has ever seen and said she was going to make it her screensaver.  I then made a wisecrack that got us laughing so hard that tears were flinging from my eyes and she peed her pants.

Maybe you had to be there.  But, in a way, you were.  Because after we settled down, we started clicking around the blogosphere.  I showed her a few of my favorites.  "Introduced" her to Jennifer, AG & Company at RoD, Bobness, BOSSY, and all the cobags at Three Bulls!, once again trying to get her hooked on the Internets.

She loves music like I do, so I've told her all about billy pilgrim, Jeddie Ningo and Kevin Wolf.

I told her that I can't believe she doesn't comment on my blog.  And that she should comment on my blog.  She's quick and funny and would be a commenting BlogiStar in no time.   

Although she doesn't quite understand the blogosphere, she does understand my blog addiction because she's got addictions of her own.  And she's busy with those addictions.  And that's probably a good thing.  Because if she started commenting here and clicking around the blogosphere, she'd end up loving all of you.  And I know she would hook up with Res.  And if that ever happened, those two would drop me like a hot potato.

They would!  I know them.  They'd totally ditch me!
